On a recent podcast recording, my guest said something profound.
“All transformation is collaborative.”
We didn’t get to dig more into that, and we cut if from the episode. Still, let’s look at this now, and how we can use this idea to unlock movement on projects and dreams that are most meaningful to us.
Personal and professional transformation can be defined as the profound shift from one state to another.
Why is personal transformation important? Einstein put it well:
“We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them”
To create a new life, a next chapter, or even just a new feeling in a relationship, we have to try doing new things.
One myth is that this journey of self-discovery is a solitary quest. However, the reality is far richer and more complex. True transformation is a collaborative endeavor, woven from the threads of influences, mentors, and communities that shape our paths. And with any creative endeavor, it also means that some material will end up on the cutting room floor.
MENTORS
These are the individuals we look up to and who illuminate our paths with their wisdom, experience, and encouragement. Whether it's a trusted teacher, a wise friend, or a respected leader, mentors provide insights and perspectives that challenge and inspire us to action. Action is key here, nothing changes without movement. Mentors offer direction and suggestions for small steps. As guides, they steer us away from pitfalls and towards our goals. Their experience gives both knowledge and strength.
COMMUNITIES
Our social and professional circles, be it friends, family, or colleagues, shape our beliefs, values, and behaviors in profound ways. In these communities, we find support, accountability, and camaraderie. In my group program for creatives, yes I offer 84 days of small steps to growth but every. single. participant says the most valuable aspect is being in a community of people doing the work. Being rigorous about who surrounds us is key. Our communities of support should celebrate our victories, offer solace in times of struggle, and hold us accountable to our commitments.
THE CUTTING ROOM
Not all influences push us in the right direction, some would rather fan our flames of self doubt or actively try to hold us back. Just as a gardener prunes away dead branches to foster new growth, we must assess the people and activities in our lives and discern which ones nurture our aspirations and which ones impede them. This process of discernment requires courage and clarity. Ending or ghosting relationships is hard, though it’s easier with clarity. Clarity looks like knowing who you want to become and being willing to serve that purpose.
Letting go does not diminish the value of past connections but rather creates space for new growth and possibilities. I am grateful for the bad relationships, or ones that became bad, because they allowed me to become much clearer in who I am.
Personal transformation is a collaborative dance between influences and our inner selves. It is a journey guided by mentors, supported by communities, and marked by the courage to let go of that which no longer serves us.
WHERE DO WE BEGIN?
Make a list. Imagine you are a company seeking to grow and deepen your impact in the world. Who would be on your Board of Friends? Who in your life would you trust to support, console, and hold you accountable, all without judgment?
I encourage you to reach out to those on that list, tell them about your dreams for the next year, three, or five. Ask them for their wisdom, and see what new growth emerges.
